Software development isn’t what it was done 3 years ago
LLMs have completely changed how we develop software.
The real joy of coding by hand is taken away. Nobody expects you to code anymore. In fact, they recommend coding via LLMs.
LLMs review all my PRs first.
I have seen that the amount of learning an individual does has declined.
Interest in true software engineering has reduced too. Probably, we all need to find a different way to enjoy software development again.
You can’t enjoy it how you did a few years back.
Now it’s hard to find people with whom you can speak and understand new things related to tech. Usually, everyone prefers LLMs as the source of truth. In many cases, LLMs do provide great answers.
But software development is not only about solutions. It’s the small appreciation one would receive after building something. The craft itself many times appreciated individuals.
When thousands of people are using the feature that you hand-coded, you find a great amount of pleasure just to look at it.
I personally haven’t hand-coded anything for nearly a year now. Yes, I do solve a few DSA problems, but it is not something that I do at work. LLMs have become the true assistants for every individual at work. They are doing what one says.
They are creating a mess at the same time.
Many times, the product feature that should have taken 50$, taking 300$ (this is not the exact number, but that is what is happening around), because of constant iteration, no locked requirements, and bad & quick software engineering practices.
Yes, in the future, tokens might be reduced, or AI might become so effecient that the cost may go down significantly.
We need to come up with a slower and more efficient way of software development. Well-crafted software must be the priority.
